Professor Trefil Interviewed on Big Picture Science Radio Show

Robinson Professor of Physics James Trefil was recently interviewed on the Big Picture Science radio show, hosted by the SETI Institute about his new book, Space Atlas: Mapping the Universe and Beyond.  Starting with our own solar system, the book then travels outward to the edge of the universe, stopping at important stages along the way.  The interview begins at around the 42:30 mark.  You can listen here.

Scientific Literacy: A Modest Proposal

Robinson Professors Robert Hazen and James Trefil co-authored a chapter for a book titled Science and the Educated American: A Core Component of Liberal Education. The title of their chapter is “Scientific Literacy: A Modest Proposal.”  Their “modest proposal for achieving scientific literacy recommends reaching out to non-science majors with courses that place science–in its broadest sense–within a context that is relevant and accessible to all undergraduates.” Within the chapter they define scientific literacy, propose a teaching strategy, and explore twenty great ideas of science.
